It has taken a while, however we have been allowed to submit a proposal to acquire the former Manners Sutton school as a community hub.
The outline submitted is that we have: a community bakery run by a professional baker plus help from locals to get it up and running. Once this has been completed we plan to add apprenticeships for both bakery and shop / tea room.
There will also be a nursery, initially for twelve pupils, and again when settled apprenticeships are planned to allow expansion to the capacity of twenty. The site will provide secure internal space and outside play areas in the grounds.
The remaining internal space will be a combination of community space for activity and sport in the main hall as well as serving as a function space. The other rooms are to be let as office / meeting rooms for groups, clubs and societies in addition to commercial office space.
All these community business extensions will enable the hub (ASK Hive) to become self sufficient with little or no requirement for ongoing grants and handouts. This will allow greater scope to broaden community involvement and activities.
The next step for the proposal is its scrutiny and when it passes this stage it is passed to the finance and property portfolio holder at Nottinghamshire County Council for final approval.
Because of local elections we are advised that we shall be told shortly after the June 2024 council meeting.
Our next steps are preparing for submitting applications for grants and fundraising to provide the initial funds for repairs, alterations etc to get underway.
The ASK Hive team
Spot on Roger! I sincerely hope the seeds now sown helps to grow the enthusiasm of the ASK community. After all, what’s not to like? A big thank you to everyone involved with getting the project thus far. Mindful of the need to avoid naming the main protagonists, well done and thanks to both of you!
Well done Bob for the vast amount of time & effort put into this project so far, & also to Roger for your expertise.
Let's hope the council see sense & allow things to progress.
Well done to all those involved.
Excellent, this is a superb opportunity for a much needed community facility serving Averham, Staythorpe and Kelham. With all the industrialisation being proposed surrounding our communities, this is and will be a breath of fresh air.
